Our Year 5 Curriculum

Year 5: Autumn Term 2023

 Welcome to Year 5

We are delighted to welcome you to our Year 5 class page where you will gain an insight into some of the learning we will be doing throughout the year. Take a look at our curriculum overview to see what we have planned this year.

Our topic this term is 'Anglo Saxons and Vikings' and we have lots of exciting and challenging lessons to look forward to. Our class novel this term is 'Beowulf', which links to our history topic, about an Anglo Saxon Warrior who defeats a series of monsters. We will be doing our own versions of the story in our writing lessons. In our Science lessons we will be learning about 'Living things and their habitat' this will give us lots of opportunities to carry out investigations and learn about the parts of a flower and how plants reproduce, as well as looking at the life cycles of a range of animals.

In maths, we will be focusing on place value initially and then moving onto mental and written addition and subtraction. It is still really important to continue working on our quick recall of our timestables and we will continue to practise these throughout the Autumn term.

Reading is extremely important and we will read daily in class and we expect the children to read at least three times a week at home and record this in their reading diary. The children will be rewarded with our bronze, silver and gold reading bands if they reach the target number.

We will keep you updated with key information and photographs on our Class Dojo page and we will also upload photographs of our learning on here too.
